CELEBRATING LENT AS A FAMILY

If you have a background anything like mine, you grew up without Lent. I heard about it, sure, but it wasn’t a part of my church’s yearly calendar or my own family’s celebrations.

I was content with that. But I think I was also missing out on something.

Something that the Church has celebrated for centuries.

Something that Christians all over the world observe together.

Something that causes us to pause and reflect on the Gospel in a deeper way–and for 40 days, no less.

All these somethings made me want to add this part of the liturgical calendar to my own family’s life, just like Advent in the Christmas season.

But how do you celebrate Lent as a family?

Lent traditionally involves some type of fasting. But for small children, it’s virtually impossible (and definitely not a good idea) to fast from food.

But it is definitely possible to worship together as a family in a very Cross- and Resurrection-focused way.

How can we do that purposefully, easily, and intentionally?

A LENT AND EASTER DEVOTIONAL FOR THE FAMILY

My desire to raise my children with Lent as part of our yearly traditions led me to create my own book. I wanted it to be engaging, with activities, devotions, memory verses, songs for worship, and great discussions that could foster deep conversations as my children grow.

And that’s how Seeking the Savior: A Family Devotional for Worshiping Jesus During Lent was born!

Seeking the Savior is a 40-day devotional that the entire family can enjoy together during the season leading up to Easter. The text itself is highly understandable for even the youngest of children.

The fun hide-and-seek activities, Bible memory verses, worship songs, discussion questions, and glossary of key vocabulary words enhance the experience all the more, making it a robust Lent + Easter devotional with more than enough content to meet everyone’s different levels of maturity.

40-DAY LENT + EASTER DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Lent traditionally encompasses 40 days.

40 days of wonder.

40 days of reflection.

40 days of repentance.

The Seeking the Savior Lent devotional by Sarah Santos takes you through all 40 of these Lenten days.

It includes 40 daily devotional readings reflecting on the Names of Jesus and His story within the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

The daily readings in Seeking the Savior also journey beyond Easter Sunday to include the glorious truths of the Ascension and the Second Coming of Christ, meant to give children a more complete picture of what it is that Jesus accomplished at Easter.

A CHRISTIAN BIBLE RESOURCE FOR THE ESL / EL / ELL / TEFL / TESOL CLASSROOM

Seeking the Savior isn’t only a family Lenten devotional. If you are looking for a Bible-based resource to use with English learners, Seeking the Savior is for you too!

Once upon a time, I was a newly graduated college student setting up my EFL classroom from scratch. In between cooking meals from the outdoor market and grabbing a few winks of sleep, I scoured the internet for resources to teach my students English through Bible-based resources.

Sadly, I found few high-quality ones that I could use as units. While I was grateful for the resources available, I also felt the desire to create something that I knew I could use year after year with multiple students–something that was interactive, explained commonly used Christian terms in an understandable way, and clearly shared the Gospel.

Writing Seeking the Savior was my way of reflecting back on those early days in the classroom and wanting to meet the needs of other teachers who–I am sure–somewhere in the world face the same predicament I once faced.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Have I mentioned that I am sooooooo excited to use this book with my little boys this year? (If you haven’t heard yet, let me just gush a bit right now. Haha.)

It has always been a dream I’ve carefully guarded in my heart to one day write books that I could share with other people. (“Carefully guarded” I say–unless you are my family and you watched me spend hours a day writing books on my bed as a 10-year-old girl.)

I pray that this dream-turned-reality is a blessing to you and leads your family to adore our wonderful Savior even more.
